Buying a Baby Crib - 5 Things to Consider

from: Lynn Kenilworth

When you are six months into your pregnancy, it is time to get serious about buying the furniture needed for the new baby. In their excitement, some people cannot wait that long and have the nursery ready just a few months after finding out the new baby is coming. Whenever you decide to look at baby furniture, there are things you need to keep in mind as you shop for the new baby.

1. Does the baby crib meet safety standards?

The government has strict safety standards for the manufacture of baby cribs. Most stores will not sell cribs that do not meet or exceed these standards. This does not mean the crib has to be expensive, although you can spend a lot if you want designer brands.

Things to consider when choosing a baby crib are:
a. Is the mattress tight fitting against the sides and firm?
b. Are there any broken or missing slats or cutouts?
c. Are the slats no more than 2.38 inches apart (the gap the size of a soda can)?
d. Are the sides and posts well padded or designed so you can add padding?

2. Drop Sides

Baby cribs are designed with single or double drop sides. This means that either one side or both sides may be collapsed so you can reach your baby easier. Baby cribs have different kinds of drop sides. The most commom is using a knee push, while others may be adjusted using a foot bar or a two handed double trigger. Some baby cribs have sides that fold down.

Tall parents may not need drop sides as they can reach into the baby crib with no stress. Fixed sided baby cribs may be considered if there are older children in the home and you do not want them able to drop the sides and reach the baby.

Almost all shorter people want drop sides. If the baby crib is placed against a wall, you may need only one side to drop. Center of the room placed baby cribs may be more convenient with double drop sides.

3. Is it important that the baby crib convert to bigger bed?

Some parents do not want to have to buy two beds for their baby within two years and consider a baby crib that converts to a bigger bed later on. Some baby cribs can be converted into a toddler bed while others can convert into a full size adult sized bed. These type baby crib beds are usually more expensive but not usually more than buying two beds.

4. The mattress suport and height

Most all baby cribs come with adjustable mattress height mechanisms to raise or lower the mattress. Usually two or three height adjustments are sufficient. Metal spring systems for height adjustment are the most durable. Vinly systems are cheaper but may not last the rigor of a growing bouncing baby.

5. Is there such a thing as a good quality, low cost baby crib?

Furniture manufacturers know that not all of us are blessed with large bank accounts. They make quality, lower cost baby cribs. The woodwork may not be as ellaborate or the spring systems quite as strong but they have to pass government safety standards. Many furniture stores carry discount baby cribs. The Internet is a good place to look, also. If buying a used baby crib, try to find out the manufacturing details and research its history and safety record before making a final decision.

When buying baby cribs or any baby furniture, keep the safety of your little one first and foremost in your mind.
